Brothers Boots and Spike, brings us Southern Barbeque with San Diego Attitude.

Truckin' since October, 2011, Boots says their inspiration just comes from the Love of Cooking! They went with the truck over a brick and mortar because they wanted to be the Masters of their own destination, and destiny. This is something they hope will stay in the family for generations to come.

Developing their flavor for well over 30 years, the brothers serve up their labor of love to us hungry consumers in the form of pig, cow and chicken slow smoked for "give or take" 17 hours with oakwood.

Spike being the Sauce Man and Boots being the Meat Man the combine their super BBQ powers combined they form Slow Cal BBQ. They are recognized by the Kansas City BBQ Society, 2nd place winners of the East County Food Truck Wars and they took 1st place in the Rematch.

Some of their biggest sellers are their Slow Cal Oinker and the OG.
Spike says, "This is the best BBQ in Southern California, if you don't believe me, come try it for yourself."
I asked him what his personal favorite was and he said, "Oh, that'd be the Dirty Mama."

Then he smiled at me and said, "We're slow
smoked and all attitude." and we had a good laugh about it.

You can tell the brothers definitely have a great sense of humor, especially when you see things like their signature "Piggy Pops" which are delicious Red Velvet (you know I love it) cake pops made to look like the swine we swoon for.

I had even joked when I bit into it after seeing the red, I said, "Looks a bit bloody." and they both laughed.

But enough about that! Let's get to the great eats! Let me introduce you to, THE OINKER!

Look at that and tell me that doesn't make your mouth water! Believe you me its BBQ to be respected!
The pork was extremely fork tender and had great flavor and the taste was only heightened by their signature sauce. It was sweet but not overpowering and it was fascinating how the bread cut down the sweetness and really let the spice of the sauce come through. The coleslaw right on the sandwich made for a great textured crunch. They've definitely proven that the Kansas City BBQ Society Certificate belongs in their window.

Introducing Thai 1 On! Truckin' since November of 2011, two brothers, Scott and Pat, and Chef Enrique have been active in Gatherings all over San Diego! Having formed the SD Food Truck Alliance, this group of trucks takes regular "field trips" to places like Anahiem, Temecula, Redlands, Vegas, and the Del Mar Fair Grounds, and active supporters of Meals on Wheels.

Not many trucks can say that they have their own mascot!
This is Mango the Tiger! Mango enjoys all manner
of food but loves Thai 1 On's Chicken Satay. I guess that's why he is stuck like glue to the side of their truck.

Scott and Pat's family taught them how to cook traditional Thai food, and they took the skills they learned to a higher level by getting the
truck and "bringing a beach feel" to the food.
Traditional and Non-Traditional alike, you can find it both on the truck.

Using Choice meat and local produce, they said their food is meant to be "relaxed, inviting food." and while it certainly is inviting food, I wouldn't plan on taking a relaxing food journey, oh no. This food makes your tongue dance in your mouth! From their new Panang Shrimp Pasta to their famous Drunken Noodles!

Let us start with the Curry Fries. I told them just to give me a small portion so I could try them, they hand me a small bucket and tell me it's a half order of fries! Not that I can complain! I have never tasted anything like them before. The flavor is awesome, and if the fries themselves aren't spicy enough for you, they come with a dipping sauce of Sriracha aioli. The fries are thick cut, which is always appreciated, and the sauce is creamy and flavorful.

The Spicy Basil Fried Rice with Shrimp was just delicious in every sense of the word. The stirfry sauce is homemade and a closely guarded secret, but what I can tell you is that the rice contains garlic chili, Black Tiger Shrimp (they ain't messin' around), onions and fresh Thai Basil, and topped off with green onions.
Believe you me, the dish has some heat to it but its not so hot that you can't taste the other ingredients. Its a sweet spicy and definitely full flavor, but will clear your sinuses and appease your mouth at the same time.
No complaints here! I definitely give both of these dishes thumbs up and I will VERY much so be dreaming of those fries.

Looking forward to my next visit with you boys!Lyekkahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02587787201264430147noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6936065928144462197.post-50047076773047818222012-04-11T12:09:00.000-07:002012-04-11T12:12:13.530-07:00Delicioso - Torta

Since the last time we left Jorge, there have been
many, many wonderful things happening for the
Delicioso Truck.
Despite having mechanical difficulties, replacing the engine, Jorge says they are back with a vengeance!

But the engine is not all that is new! They now carry an array of new sodas, and frituras which is a sort of Mexican pork rind, and a new Veggie and Shrimp Sandwich.

Jorge has been very busy working with charities and donating 20% of profits to Muscular Dystrophy, and Project Walk.
He has been catering a lot at colleges and elementary schools, and once a week he has been hooking up with AT&T to sponsor free food for the poor. Truly great work, Jorge! We commend you!

So, what did my tastebuds get to enjoy this trip? Well, there were many delicious looking things on the menu but I decided to go with the Torta. Filled with Ham, chorizo, carnitas, guacamole, pico de gillo, bacon, and mozzarella. The effect of which was very similar to ham sloppy joe! So very delicious.

Next time you see the Delicioso Truck, I highly suggest getting one of these if its on the menu. Even the bread was amazing. The Bakery they use is Selecta located on Orange and 3rd down in Chula Vista.
Lyekkahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02587787201264430147noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6936065928144462197.post-36243726760638430412012-03-20T00:20:00.000-07:002012-03-20T00:24:02.413-07:00The Insight on the InSlider!Catching them on their Second day out, I got the chance to talk to Mike of the new InSlider truck!

I have eagerly awaited the arrival of this truck for weeks! As I exited the car, the smell of beef and bacon was hanging heavy in the air.

The smell made me conjure up visions of old cartoons the way a character would smell something good in the breeze and suddenly they would float up into the air and follow the smell to the source in a blissful trance. . . .

Yea, it was kinda like that . . . . .

I practically did the same thing until I came upon the truck and took a look at the menu.

Very well planned menu, decently priced. 6 different choices of sliders, 4 kinds of fries, and even mini corndogs.

You could buy the sliders individually or in "packs" of 3's.

For their second day out they had at least a dozen people out and about either ordering or waiting for their food. I could see how busy they were inside, speedily going about their business. I watched them for a good while, waiting for a better opportunity to approach them. It was like watching a choreographed ballet as they danced around each other. Busy, busy, busy.

All of a sudden I hear them calling out, "Sorry for the wait! I know its hot out here, if you're waiting for food or to order, please grab a drink, on the house!"

I haven't even met them yet and already I like them!

I waited till the crowd died down and I finally got the right timing to go up and introduce myself. I got to meet Mike, Carey and Aaron that day. Mike sat down with me on the grass and told me all about how InSliders came to be!

He was living out of state and came to visit his cousin, Stacey here in San Diego. He loved the city and wanted to stay so they got to talking about the future and the options to make a living. Culinary was the way to go!
Originally they wanted to open a Slider restaurant but loved the fact that trucks had mobility, and a cheaper price tag, and thusly, InSliders was born!

I asked him why Sliders? What was the inspiration behind that particular choice.
His answer: "Sharability"

"Why be limited to one big burger or sandwich?" he said. "Why not have lots of little sandwiches which you can mix and match and share with your friends. Its community food."

They get their brioche style buns from a bakery off India Street called Gibaldi's. The rest of their ingredients are top notch stuff, believe you me. Lets first off start with their beef. . . . which is Kobe. Renowned for its flavor, tenderness, and well-marbled texture. . . . HELLO! Did someone say delicious?

To the right here you will see 3 of their selections; The InSlider, The Greek, and the Bada Bing. Two beef, and one chicken.

The InSlider is, of course, their signature mini-burger consisting of a Kobe beef patty, cheddar, pickle, tomato, and caramelized balsamic onions. TA-STY! The beef is delicious to say the least but I gotta say that what I loved most about this slider was the way the sweet and woody balsamic onions played so well with that cheddar!

Next up was The Greek. Same Kobe beef patty, but this time it was paired with cucumber, Roma tomato, red onion, lettuce, feta cheese, and tzatziki sauce. Talk about a bang of Greek flavor! Now normally I'd skip the tzatziki, I don't even like it on my gyros, but it was actually deliciously subtle and took the backseat to the feta/kobe beef combo.

Now my favorite out of the three, the Bada Bing! I was raised in an Italian family and I am quite fond of the flavors of the boot-shaped country. So its always great to see it done right! Chicken breaded in PANKO!!! . . . what the! . . . . yea, you heard me. Panko breadcrumbs. It gave the chicken a surprisingly crispy texture and kept it nice and juicy on the inside. Then top it off with Mozzarella, Parmesan, fresh basil, and tomato sauce. That basil came through so nicely and gave the whole slider a well rounded herby flavor.

Now, ladies and gents, I've had a loooooooooooooooooooooooooot of Parmesan Truffle fries in my food truck eating days. I've had them every which way, and it seems like every truck out there has their own recipe. Come ON, food trucks! Give me something different!!!! Wait a tick! . . . . . What's this?

Mike presented me with his head nod to Quebec's favorite fry food, Poutine. Never heard of Poutine before? Well, traditionally Poutine is french fries smothered with cheese curds and brown gravy.
The difference here being instead of cheese curds we have fresh grated and oh-so-fluffy Parmesan of top of crispy fries and served with a brown mushroom gravy. It was SO good! You know me and my relationship with mushrooms. . . . with dishes like this its getting harder and harder to say that I hate mushrooms.

Thank you very much for the deliciousness from your mobile kitchen! I shall be back and with reinforcements!Lyekkahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02587787201264430147noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6936065928144462197.post-55008115809013649502012-03-13T21:25:00.001-07:002012-03-13T21:25:07.065-07:00Reviews PendingI humbly apologize for the delay in last week's postings.
I have been meaning to catch up with them for the longest time, and today I finally got the chance to do so! Jason promised me Risotto!

Having been out on the road since July of 2011, Jason's dream was to have a restaurant. In his words, with the economy in rough shape it was tough to get a restaurant, so the truck was the next best thing.
Having worked in a professional kitchen myself, I watching them prepare the food in front of my eyes, it was almost like being back there again. The way they paid attention to the last detail, garnishing and cleaning each plate made me feel as if I was dining at a 5 star restaurant. Much appreciated!

Jason told me that his main focus is using local farmer's market organic produce. No antibiotics, hormones, or enhancers in the beef, which is Brandt beef by the way. All Natural, corn fed moo cows. . . seriously you gotta try the stuff.

I got the chance to ask him what he thought about this purposed Bill 1678, to which he replied,
"I think its crap. Look at the menus of mine and other trucks then look at the cafeteria food. How many schools are serving spinach and arugula salad with fugi or gala apples and real blue cheese?"

Not many, Jason. Not many.

So, I'll betcha wanna know what it is that they gave me to sample, huh? Well feast your eyes on this spread!

Organic Turkey Chili, Mixed Wild Mushroom Risotto, Parmesan Truffle Fries, and that gorgeous Pancetta Topped Salad.

The Turkey Chili, oh I am in L<3VE!!!!!! I believe I quote myself when I took that first bite and I exclaimed that I'd like to jump into a vat of it. Nice big chunks of organic turkey, well simmered in tomatoes, onions, and zucchini! Topped with chives and sour cream, this is one chili you don't want to miss! Little bit of heat, but not too much. The texture was off the chain! You've got that nice stewed turkey, the smooth sour cream, the crunch of the chives and it was nothing if not delicious.

Now I really must take the time to announce to the world that I HATE MUSHROOMS!!!! I can't stand them! I find them repugnant! The smell, the taste, the texture. . .yeeeuuuuccckkkkk!!!!!
HOWEVER! That being said, when I tried Jason's Mixed Wild Mushroom Risotto, I ate those words. . . along with the mushrooms.
5 different varieties in fact. Portabello, Crimini, Shitake, and and Oyster accompanied by organic spinach, truffle oil, Parmesan-Reggiano, with Arborio Rice. Jason added some heat to it with some chile flakes. Just enought to make your tongue loll off to a pleasant tingle. I actually ate the whole thing and resisted the temptation to say,

. .. . which I actually did say for the Turkey Chili. . . . . which is what I used to dip some of their delicious Parmesan Truffle Fries into. Not that they needed a sauce of any kind by any means.

Now I've sampled a fair few versions of Parm-Truff fries in my time, however in never fails so amaze me how different trucks can create the same dish yet make them unique at the same time. These were probably the lightest yet crispiest fries I've tried yet. There is something in the mixture or ratio of oil to parm, or fries to fry time or the kind of parm or the kind of oil each place uses, but in my opinion, Curiocity is now to date the new reigning champion of Parm-Truff Fries!

Let's talk about this salad. In a word, "WOW!" Spinach and arugula, Fuji apples, fresh crumbled bleu cheese, pancetta crisp on the top and drizzled with a Champagne-Honey Vinagrette! It was sweet, but earthy and umami. I never get around to eating a lot of arugula but it makes me wonder if I should, it makes for a wonderful salad.

And to top it all off, I got to sample one of their delicious Brandt Beef Sliders. Lets start with the bread, which is a potato bun which is crispified on the griddle. The patty was a perfect medium rare, just the way I like it and succulent as anything. The cheddar they use on this burger is very much present in the tasting, which is a great thing because usually the cheese gets thrown in as a side note. But it was nice and up front in the flavor profile. The tomatoes are organic vine-ripened, and the pickle is almost the same size as the patty! JUMBO PICKLE!
When you first bite into the slider you get that nice crunch from the toasted bun, the hot and juicy patty and the great cheddar flavor, and then there is that creamy Curiocity sauce that defies explanation. SERIOUSLY.

My overall opinion is if you want to feel as if your are dining out at someplace fancy, this is the place to go if you don't want to spend $50 a plate at some snobby restaurant where they make swans out of napkins and the maitre d has a fake french accent. . . then Curiocity is the food truck for you!

Siblings Jenny, Ken, and Michael set out on their mobile culinary career on the night of Friday the 17th of February at the 57 Degrees Food Truck Gathering. I was absolutely honored to catch them on their very first night and to be the very first person to interview them.

I stepped up to the new truck and a winning - if not beaming - smile greeted me. I handed her my card and asked if they'd care for an interview and food review. She practically leaped through the window to hug me!

I don't think I have ever met such enthusiastic food truck owners before! Just the nicest people ever!

I took a look at their menu and found it fantastically whimsical. You have your choice of Bahn Mi in either a delicious french/viet bread hoagie style or slider style using fresh Bao Buns.
However, while what is in them may be familiar, they are hardly ordinary. You have your choice of: Moo, Doodle-Do, Oink, or Tofu.
The caricatures in the logo represent themselves. Michael is fond of pork, Jenny loves chicken, and Ken can't live without his beef.

If Ken looks familiar to you, then you are most likely a fan of the show, Survivor. Ken "The King of Smash" Hoang survived 37 out of the 39 days in Gabon back in 2008. When he was interviewed and asked what he would do with the money he won, he had said that he would open a restaurant with his family, and low and behold he kept his word!

They gave me some of their delicious Bahn Mi Sliders in the Moo and Doodle-Do variety. They were beautiful! Well, just see for yourself!

Fresh strips of carrot, cucumber and sweet onions that they had been up prepping at 3AM that morning! The chicken (pardon me) "Doodle-Do" was succulent and full of flavor. The savory or the meat, mixed with the heat of the Sriracha based sauce and cilantro and simultaneously elevated with the sweetness from the onions and the Boa bun itself. Soft rice dough, crunchy veggies, tender meat . . . the whole thing was a flavor/texture treat!

Originally from East Texas, Clinton met his Louisiana born wife Danielle and began a culinary journey together tracing Danielle's Cajun roots! Her Grandparents taught her most of what she knows, but she learned a proper Gumbo recipe from an old Cajun man Des Allamandes, Louisiana.

For the past 4 years, they've been touring back and forth from coast to coast chasing Jazz and Crawfish Festivals and private catering events with their mobile trailer kitchen. Clinton asked me if I'd still do a review even though they cook from a trailer and not a truck. I told him as long as it moves and there is food involved I talk about it!

So lets talk about it! They have a wonderful menu loaded with southern goodies with your choice of fish, chicken, shrimp and of course . . . .Gator! Pearson's is well known for their Gator Bites, as well as their Catfish and Bayou Tenders.

I had the pleasure of trying out those Gator Bites, along with some Hush Puppies and Cajun Fries, and a nice tall glass of their Sweet Tea.

I was in Southern Heaven!

Their Gator Bites, looked like chicken tenders at first glance, but when you bit into them you'd be in for a surprise! Just like Jazz, they are big, bold, and brassy! That punch of gator flavor isn't for everyone but for folks that like gator, you can't miss out on these ones! Perfectly seasoned, golden bites of swapland predator!

I would just like to take a moment to pay ultimate homage to the BEST Hush Puppies I have ever had in my life! The whole thing was just too darn perfect! Crispy outside, moist inside, and the cornmeal itself was so savory and light. I would gladly eat these every day.

The Cajun fries carried a nice big wallop. I was expecting them to be a light hint of selected herbs and spices and I nearly choked with surprise at how full flavor they were. Pearson's holds nothing back peeps!

Last but not least, there was the beautiful, beautiful Sweet Tea. Now folks, I've been spoiled rotten when it comes to Sweet Tea. My best friend, Moe, is from Georgia, and she is ever so picky when it comes to this particular subject. She knows good from bad, fake from genuine, and I'm happy to say that she's taught me how to spot a genuine when I am presented with one. I am 100% sure that Moe would classify this Tea as the Real McCoy.

It was a pleasure to meet these wonderful people and taste their true Southern Fare.Lyekkahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02587787201264430147noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6936065928144462197.post-55790273087822745362012-02-16T17:20:00.000-08:002012-02-16T19:46:09.659-08:00The Dog Shack ~ Mmmmmurder and Mmmmayhem

The Trailer in question, and it's kitchen within are guilty of tasty identity theft! Before this review is over I will have proven, without a shadow of a doubt, that not only is The Dog Shack guilty of deceitful deliciousness, but also cold blooded murder!
Ladies and Gentlemen .. . To your left (exhibit B) is a picture of the Victims. Their names are Corn Dog and Curly Fries. . . . . and to your right (exhibit C) are the Impersonators!

We are all very familiar with the Victims, are we not? How many times have we called our old friends Corn Dog and Curly Fries over for dinner? Well the next time you call them, you may very well end up with the culprits from The Dog Shack's design!

Their reign of delightful deception began in July of 2011, when one family took it upon themselves to mimic their favorite "dog" eatery from their home in Michigan. They made their own changes of course. For example: That golden glow of corn replaced by the darker pallor of Honey Wheat. Those seasoned curly fries that we know so well, replaced by healthier, tastier shoestrings of never frozen goodness . . . .

Sorry. I got carried away there for a moment.. . *ahem*

May it please the Galley, I submit that these morsels come in many guises! Sometimes those dogs appear dressed up in a bun instead of a stick. Sometimes the imposter fries try to hide under blankets of cheese, or bacon . . . . But we know better don't we folks? How could it be possible that 100% smoked beef could ever replace our childhood friend?

Having traveled quite extensively, they thought, "Wouldn't it be great to collect all of these flavors and share them with others?" So that is exactly what they set out to do!

Their dream became a reality back in February 2011, (Happy 1 year anniversary!) when Two For The Road came to be. Serving up all their favorites from their travels, and coming up with a few of their own.

Take for example this dish: The Capt. Crunch Crab Cake! This invention was inspired by the Capt. Crunch chicken fingers at Planet Hollywood.

I only have one word for this dish. "Yum!" I know at first mention of the children's cereal most people would turn green and stick out their tongue, however the cereal makes for a fantastic breading. Its actually light and crispy and only slightly sweet. I would say it reminded me of panko bread crumbs.
And believe it or not, the natural sweetness of the crab works very, very, well with it. The sauce is tangy and creamy. All around delicious!

And for desert, seeing as it was nearing Christmas, they had a delicious concoction! BLUE Velvet Pancakes with Peppermint Whipped Cream.

I would like to say they were delicious to the last bite . . . . . but my mom stole them from me . . . .
I only got one bite . . . . . . . but it was tasty. . . . . my mom sure thought the world of them . . . .

Thats the last time I take you to a Food Truck Gathering mom. . . . . . *pouts* . . . . . . . . . . stealmypancakeswillya . . . .

I mentioned retro tunes before, thats not the only retro exuding from the truck. They also serve up retro sodas including Bubble Up, Shirley Temples, and a rare original recipe Dr. Pepper that unless you live in the town of Dublin, Texas, you just can't get!

In addition, they have an awesome line of chips with neo-retro designs by the name of Mama Zuma's Revenge. They also have these amazing cookies made by The Cravory. with delicious, and bizarre flavors!

Jorge always spoils me rotten whenever I visit. I told them about how much I loved the Nemo taco last time and before I could blink I found myself stuffing my face with one! After I was done he says,
"Okay, now what do you want to try next?"

I took a look at the menu for the day and everything sounded delicious! No! Delicioso! I finally settled on the California Burrito, and it's as big as a whale but not priced like one. I had to get him to cut it in half not only so I could take a picture of it for the blog, but also so I could eat one half and safe the other for later!!!!

Here in "OMGvision", we see the detail of the carne asada, fresh herbs, tomato, cheese, and of course . . . the French Fries! Stuffed to the gills! Meat and veggies with such flavor magic!

Now, I know there are some of you out there that would count Delicioso as just another roach coach serving up Mexican food. But 2 things. . . . one, they are serving up Tex-Mex, and gourmet Tex-Mex at that . . . and two, roach coaches don't hold a candle to the food quality and flavor that Delicioso is dishing out with a totally different menu TWICE A DAY!

In between lunch and dinner, they go shopping for the produce they will use that night. You can't get that kinda freshness from your typical roach coach now can you? Nope! No way Jose!. . . I mean Jorge!

<3 LOVE YOU GUYS! <3
(back in late November) I rolled up to the North Park Farmer's Market to get my pumpkin hummus from one of the vendors there and to say hello to the folks at the Food Farm truck who are usually there, and lo and behold there is a mini green truck parked right next to them!

While the Recess truck is the largest truck in the city, the Ciao Cupcakes is easily the smallest! I knocked on the side and introduced myself to a lovely young lady named Misty who told me all about the cupcakes they make!

Having opened their truck in June of 2011, their vision was to create a place where while the eats were sweet, they were also healthy. There is absolutely nothing artificial in these cupcakes!
Misty told me that while their menu changes from week to week, they aren't ones for buying their products in bulk in advance. She jokingly admitted that hey do a lot of shopping just to keep things as fresh as possible. They don't even have time to refrigerate anything, they just make it and go!

To start off, I was given their version of a Red Velvet (you know I love them!) Since nothing artificial goes into them, Pomegranate juice was added to the batter to give the cake it's delicious dark red color. It was fluffy and light with a good Pom flavor. The icing was a whipped Marscapone cheese with pomegranate seeds on top. The Marscapone has a slightly sweet flavor of it's own so when paired up with the bittersweet of the pom, it was the perfect combination. This cupcake is a winner!

Next up, I was given their best of the season, the Pumpkin Spice with Ricotta and Walnuts. This cupcake was not only flavored with my favorite seasonal gourd, but hidden within strewn throughout like chocolate chips was bitty chunks of Ricotta. Every bite was full of flavor and texture and while I felt totally bad for eating 2 whole cupcakes, I took comfort in the knowledge that Ciao Cupcakes' creations have ABSOLUTELY NO TRANS FAT!!!!!

If I wasn't stuffed, I would have gone back for more. These cupcakes are seriously huge! No skimpy mini cakes for these gals!Lyekkahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02587787201264430147noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6936065928144462197.post-90418886424545052792012-02-10T18:17:00.000-08:002012-02-10T18:17:40.669-08:00Tantilizingly Tasty Teasers

(but that goes without saying)

In my absence from the reviewing world I've had several delicious trips in which I took my usual notes and I recall them quite fondly.

Sadly, a couple months ago now, in the same day, I visited both an old flame and a new love, both sampling their takes on the delectable Philly Cheese Steak.

First up!

Toasted buns with the
deviliciouslly tasty combo of steak, cheese, onions and peppers. These
guys never cease to amaze me.

I also got to try something a little
different . . .

What I like to call the "Elvis Special". Imagine a desert
sammy with peanut butter, bananas, and grilled up with powdered sugar.
It was really decadent. The only thing I could possibly say bad about it
is purely situational! The bananas weren't
sweet enough, but that is no fault of theirs! Those bananas have a mind
of their own, so while my tongue lacked that bit of sweet kick, the
overall flavor combo was there and the only thing that could POSSIBLY
make it better was if it was dripping with chocolate.

My Devilicious pals get two thumbs up!

Next up! Groggy's . . .

Okay so I know that I had a cheesesteak for lunch but I'll be darned if
that tantalizing taste doesn't have you craving more.

The city of Philadelphia knows
exactly why there are people lining up the block when they know full
well they are on their way to a tasty meat heart attack.

So why not
take the next logical step and slap that ooey gooey mess onto some nice crispy golden
fries?

Well that's what Groggy's did! And I sat there and savored every
last bite at the Tasty Truck Tuesday event until I was stuffed and satisfied. (Until the wonderful people
from the Pierogi truck came over with a boat load of their finest and
stuffed me till the breaking
point! . . . but that's another story)

Bless you Groggy's.
Bless you for taking a great thing and making it better. Oh so much
better. The onions and peppers mingle so playfully on the tongue and
the pyroclastic flow of hot creamy cheese over fries . . . brings a tear
to my eye really. And not because I burned my tongue. . . cause I
didn't! . . . It was just so beautiful.
I will be back! And with reinforcements!
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">I
asked Jason how he came up with the theme for the truck. He told me
that the whole idea came from the feeling of being a busy corporate
worker that sometimes you just need a break from the grind, and how he
wished he could be back in school just to have recess again. He said
that everybody needs a recess now and then, and I totally agree.
This truck's cuisine offers legit vegetarian items as well as vegan
options. Jason feels that his food takes on a more holistic approach by
fusing taste with wholesome ingredients. Fresh veg, grass-fed beef (you
know I love it), and fresh baked bread from Sadie Rose Bakery. They are
also one of, if not the only truck that actually takes online orders and
texts you when its ready! How cool is that!
Jason set me up with their Red Light/Green Light sandwich and 2 kinds of tots, and 2 of their made to order sodas!
The Red Light/Green Light sammy was SO good. Grilled vegetarian turkey
(tastes JUST like the real thing, if not better) caramelized onions, and
my absolute favorite cheese in the whole wide world . . . . Havarti.
Grill it all up and put it on fresh made sourdough and shut the front
door! But that's not all! This sammy is equipped with spicy jalapenos!
Hence the Red Light. Or you can get it without them, which makes it the
Green Light and gets a garlic aioli instead. I had the Red Light, and
wowwy, lip burning deliciousness!
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">The
sodas were really, really good. They use real ingredients, no
artificial sweeteners or fructose corn syrup. I had the Black Cherry,
which is made from real cherries, and I also tried their Root Beer. I
LOVED the Root Beer. It tasted like Root Beer used to taste in the old
days. What I really liked about both of them is that you got all the
wonderful flavor without getting all the overbearing sweetness you get
from soda now adays. You need to try them . . .honestly.
boring ketchup/mayo mixture at all. Its flavorful and has a bit of zing
to it. I noticed they serve all their burgers on fresh Chibatta bread. A
novel idea because its so light and fluffy with all its nooks and
crannies that it soaks up all the flavor that otherwise would have been
lost! Best part is the bread doesn't get soggy while doing this. The
beef was nicely cooked and had good flavor. Good burger. Loved that

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">THE
GODS OF BBQ HAVE SPOKEN! And their names are Peter and Bill and they
drive a truck with a pig snout! These two brothers have been cooking
together for 20 years, and as of 6 days ago, they ventured down the
road, literally, to the land of Food Truck awesomeness. When I heard
that this brand new truck was in the neighborhood, my taste buds started
blooming as the call of bbq sounded. The brothers told me all about
how they slow cook their meat for 24 hours using different combos of
Hickory, Oak, and fruit tree woods such as Cherry and Apple. They have
their own secret dry rub and a variety of homemade bbq sauces, of which
you can choose from mild, medium, and hot. Of course the first thing I
notice are the prices. Nothing over $5! Their menu has everything from
pork to beef, to hushpuppies, to home made apple pie! I just gotta
say, their apple pie is their grandmother's recipe and their mother
makes the pies for the boys because she won't give them the recipe!.
More on the pie later. The boys were VERY generous to me and loaded me
up with some of their best fair.
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Next,
the boys had me sample their Beef Brisket Sandwich. With my first bite,
I was in heaven. BBQ Brisket heaven. Thick chunks of peppery beef with
its sweet, medium heat sauce. The pot roast consistency is enough to
make a tear come to your eye. The best part about their BBQ is that it
is not saturated with sauce. The meat stands on its own and speaks for
itself with the flavor and almost doesn't even need the sauce. But the
sauce is darn good too. It does nothing but enrich the overall
experience. I even ate the slaw! Ya'll know I'm not the biggest slaw
fan. Cool thing was, its not a mayo based slaw. The brothers admitted to
me that neither one of them like mayo, so they made a vinegar based
slaw instead and it was quite good.
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Now
for desert. The Wo-Wo's Apple Pie. The pies were sitting in the window
the way you see in the cartoons of old. Flaky crust and sweet tender
apples. There was some sort of creamy vanilla yumminess folded into the
pie that I couldn't quiet put my finger on. This is definitely not your
average apple pie. If a normal pie is compared to apple juice, this pie
would be compared to a terrific apple cider.
Insanely affordable prices, fantastic portion size, and if I had more
than two thumbs I would give them more. I'm at least raising both of my
big toes as well.Lyekkahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02587787201264430147noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6936065928144462197.post-33551854031016020342012-02-10T13:14:00.001-08:002012-02-10T13:14:27.370-08:00Food Junkies ~ Fish Tacos

I was gonna get some regular old fast food today but over my Food Truck Follower
app on my phone I saw a truck I hadn't tried yet was right close to me.
FOODJUNKIES. As I pull up, the truck made a big, bold statement with
its awesome paint job. As I walk up, the first thing I usually look at
are the prices. I was pleasantly surprised to see most everything on the
menu was priced at $5. I saw an Angus burger, a grilled chicken
sandwich your choice of regular or bbq.

I
asked what it was that they thought would be the best to review and
they quickly answered the fish tacos. I said fish tacos it is! As they
were preparing the food, I got to talking with them about what they do.
They've been trucking for 10 years, they have 2 trucks, and they mostly
do catering. They are available for any kind of event, and complete with
a fully customizable menu. Every thing from breakfast to dinner. My
tacos were awesome to say the least. 2 crispy battered fish with all the
fixins. What I really loved was the yogurt based white sauce.Great
food, good conversation, FOODJUNKIES gets two thumbs up from me!

Lunch time comes around only once a day
unless you are a Hobbit. MIHO is near so i think its high time I tried
one of their burgers. The menu was freshly chalked in bright colors and
a burger was indeed what caught my eye. A burger named Mozz.

Grass-fed
beef, cherry tomato jam, vanilla, local bib and local briocche. The
grass-fed beef is really growing on me. It has such a succulent flavor.
The Mozz burger was well seasoned... perhaps a bit over seasoned, but it
tasted like a good steak. Tomato jam wouldn't usually turn my head but
it was sweet and complimented the savory. I unfortunately did not taste
the vanilla in the burger which is way attracted me to it. The cheese
was locally made and was thick and creamy. Overall good burger with room
for improvement. I also sampled their fresh Horchatta. Excellent stuff!
Not overly sweet and the cinnamon wasn't overpowering.

The
area was full of happy smiling faces as the DJ spun away. Great trucks
all the way around. One I have been dying to try was front and center
with no line. The purple Pierogi Truck. I looked around and the other
trucks were bustling busy. My mind was made up. I walked up to the
truck with confidence and saw a man inside sit down

A
lady came to the window and I said, "You better make him stand up cause
I'm gonna make him work!" She laughed and told him what I had said.
Laughing, he came to the window and asked what I would like. I told him
that I wrote reviews and asked what his recommendation would be. Be said
the Stuffed Cabbage but they were sold out. Be said the second choice
would be the meat Pierogi. I took him up on the recommendation.

I don't think that I have ever been more amazed by Polish cuisine. They
were absolutely mind-blowingly delicious! Savory meat filling which was
the consistency of the best tuna casserole you've ever had, in a
potato shell somewhere between ravioli and gyoza. Had a great tooth
feel. Not soggy but not too al dente. To top it off there were green
onions and delicious BACON! The bacon actually did more for the dish
than one may realize. While eating I took notice of the fact that while
the Pierogi was savory, it wasn't salty. Eating the bacon with the
pierogi gave it a wonderful flavor texture. Brilliant! And as someone
who normally doesn't like cole slaw, their sweet slaw was delicious.Lyekkahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02587787201264430147noreply@blogger.com0
